Pokémon’s 30th Anniversary Set Looks Incredible — But Please Don’t Pay Hype Prices

The Pokémon TCG’s 30th Celebration set may end up being one of the biggest Pokémon releases we’ve seen in years.

The nostalgia is there. The artwork is there. The chase cards are there. And with Pokémon celebrating its 30th anniversary, demand was always going to be enormous.

But right now, collectors need to remember one very important thing:

The set hasn’t even officially released yet.

And some of the prices we’re seeing are getting completely out of hand.

$90 Booster Packs? $370 Classic Collection Packs?

We’ve already seen individual 30th Celebration booster packs being offered around the $90 range, while Classic Collection packs have been sold at prices approaching $370.

Think about that for a second.

We’re talking about hundreds of dollars for packs from a Pokémon set that hasn’t had its full worldwide release yet.

There will absolutely be cards from 30th Celebration worth chasing. There will probably be products that become genuinely difficult to find. And there may eventually be sealed products from this era that become fantastic collectibles.

But none of that means collectors should feel pressured to pay enormous premiums before the market has even had an opportunity to develop.

The Number Everyone Should Be Paying Attention To: 180 Million Packs

One of the biggest pieces of information circulating ahead of release is that approximately 180 million 30th Celebration packs are planned across the product lineup.

That is an enormous amount of product.

It doesn't mean every store will have unlimited inventory on September 16. Distribution can still be uneven. Certain products can still sell out. Pokémon Center exclusives can still command premiums, and the most desirable products may be difficult to grab at MSRP.

But temporary availability and actual scarcity are two very different things.

When millions upon millions of packs begin entering the market, they will be opened.

Then more will be opened.

Then the later product waves will arrive.

And suddenly the market will have significantly more information — and significantly more supply — than it has today.

Paying extreme prices now means you're paying for uncertainty and hype, not established scarcity.

Buying Singles Before We Know Pull Rates Is a Huge Gamble

This is where we think collectors should be especially careful.

We’re already seeing early 30th Celebration singles entering the market and commanding enormous premiums.

The problem?

We don't truly know how difficult these cards are going to be to pull at scale yet.

Small early samples can give us clues, but they aren't the same thing as having millions of packs opened worldwide.

Imagine paying $500 for a chase card today only to discover after release that it appears once every few hundred packs instead of once every few thousand.

Supply explodes.

Listings multiply.

Sellers begin undercutting each other.

And the price can change very quickly.

We've seen versions of this cycle repeatedly in the Pokémon hobby:

Hype → limited early supply → huge prices → mass release → more supply → price discovery.

Sometimes a card maintains an incredible price. Sometimes it doesn't.

Until we have reliable pull-rate data and enough sales volume to establish a real market, you're essentially betting on what the supply might look like.

There Is Nothing Wrong With Being Excited

We want to make this clear: we are extremely excited about 30th Celebration.

This isn't an argument against the set.

It's an argument for patience.

Pokémon's 30th anniversary deserves to be celebrated. Rip some packs. Chase your favorite cards. Build the Classic Collection. Hunt down your favorite Pikachu artwork.

Just don't let FOMO convince you that you need to pay $90 for a booster pack because you might never see one again.

With the amount of product expected to enter the market, there's a very good chance patience will be rewarded.

We aren't interested in convincing collectors to chase inflated pre-release prices.

Once 30th Celebration officially launches, packs are being opened in volume, pull rates become clearer, and the singles market begins to settle, Stonemill Hobby will be actively sourcing 30th Celebration singles.

Offer 30th Celebration singles at or below the established market price whenever possible.
